We've all heard her name, Mata Hari. The mention of her stage name brings all sorts of images to mind. As a small child, she was adored by her father, then thrust into poverty and sent to live with various relatives, and to different schools where trouble began. From there, a miserable marriage that took she and her children to various places where her soldier husband was stationed. The Dutch native eventually divorced her husband, and went to Paris. She became an exotic dancer and a courtesan. During World War I she was accused of spying for Germany, and was executed by a French firing squad in 1917.
