Other Women in the Lives of the Presidents: From the Founding Fathers to
Franklin Roosevelt

La Madeleine's on Lemmon

tba

These slide illustrated lectures will examine some of the presidents, and the other women in their lives who were not their wives. While we will take a brief look at several presidents, the main emphasis will be on Thomas Jefferson and Franklin Roosevelt, and to a lesser degree, time permitting, John F. Kennedy. After Jefferson's wife died, his slave, Sally Hemings bore him several children. though married to Eleanor, Franklin Roosevelt had several other women who had an enormous influence on his life for different reasons. These women would include his overbearing mother, Sara; his private secretary, Missy LeHand; his distant cousin and close friend and confidante, Margaret Suckley; and in a romantic vein, Lucy Mercer Rutherford.
