Paris: Biography of the City of Light, Part III
The Louis' & The Age of the Baroque & The Enlightenment
La Madeleine's on Lemmon Ave.
March 18 and 25, April 1, 2013 from 7:30-9:00 p.m.
These lavisly illustrated lectures will explore the evolution of Paris during the seventeenth and first half of the eighteenth centuries as we move from Renaissance Paris to the age of the Baroque and early Enlightenment, or the time of the Louis'. In the seventeenth century, we'll meet Cardinal Richelieu, one of the last great ministers/princes of the church who wielded enormous power. By the mid seventeenth century Paris began to turn on the monarchy in events such as the Fronde. The latter display of anti-royal sentiment will cause Louis XIV to retreat from Paris, and establish his court at Versailles. Learn about what transpired in Paris while the king was away, and the utterly excessive luxury of the king's court at Versailles.
